HPV (human papillomavirus) is the virus responsible for genital warts, a sexually transmitted disease (STD). In fact, it's arguably the most common sexually transmitted disease today -- a large majority of the population may be infected and not even know it. Although there are hundreds of types of HPV, only a few are known to be a cause of cervical cancer. Fortunately, a vaccine is available.
